West-East connection: A new era of transport in Uri

The West-East connection road (WOV) in the canton of Uri is set to open in August 2025. This major infrastructure project aims to reduce traffic congestion in the densely populated residential areas in the valley floor and improve the quality of life for residents.

WOV

WOV in operation from 5 a.m. on 26 August 2025

The WOV has been completed after three years of construction. On 23 August 2025, the public will be invited to view the new route on foot or by bicycle. The route will be opened to motor traffic at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, 26 August.
The WOV is more than just a road link. It specifically complements the transport network in the Uri valley floor and enables a new transport system that is important for the future development of the canton.

Accompanying measures (FlaMa)

Parallel to the opening of the WOV, accompanying measures will begin in Altdorf and Schattdorf. These were decided by the Uri cantonal parliament in order to divert through traffic from the village centres and improve the quality of life. The accompanying measures have been legally approved. Measures in the Bürglen section are in the planning stage.

  • Altdorf: A 20 km/h shared space will be created in the centre. Ahead of this, 30 km/h zones will be created to further calm traffic. These FlaMa will be implemented by the end of September 2025. This is the only way for the WOV to be effective.
  • Schattdorf: Adjustments will be made along Gotthardstrasse, including a ban on heavy goods vehicles between the Schächen junction and Militärstrasse, as well as improvements for bicycle traffic (there is now a central lane for bicycles travelling uphill).
Construction work around the new Schattdorf roundabout still needs to be completed. The next construction stages will see the final connection of Dorfstrasse to the new roundabout and the renovation of Gotthardstrasse up to the Uri dental practice.

Four key measures

The WOV is only one part of the new transport system in the Urner Talboden. The aim is to relieve the villages, which are currently burdened by through traffic. A new regional transport concept (rGVK) is being implemented, based on these four pillars:

1.  West-east connecting road (WOV)
2.  A2 half junction Altdorf South
3.  Altdorf cantonal railway station with expansion of the bus system
4.  Accompanying measures in residential areas

Traffic monitoring

Comprehensive traffic monitoring will be used to evaluate the effects of the new traffic management system and the accompanying measures. This will enable a precise analysis of traffic development and serve as a basis for possible adjustments.
