Werkmatt AG submits building application for site 13 at Werkmatt Uri

Werkmatt AG, part of the Christoph Schoop Group, has submitted the building application for site 13 to the municipality of Altdorf. The company acquired the leasehold for plots 9 and 13 in 2023 – now the next milestone is following on in the shape of the planning application.

A new building with a future
As a further component of Werkmatt Uri, a new six-storey building, designed by Galli Rudolf Architekten from Zurich, is being constructed on the centrally located plot 13. The hybrid building, which is almost 96 metres long and 19 metres wide, consists of two base storeys using the skeleton construction method and a predominantly wooden 4-storey superstructure. The modular design concept and high degree of prefabrication will also have a positive effect with respect to efficient realisation.

With its largely prefabricated façade, the building appears like a timber construction from the outside. In combination with the photovoltaic modules integrated into the parapets, the new building has a contemporary look and responds to the issues of the day. In addition, the roof surfaces contribute to the generation of solar energy and will supply future tenants with electricity. The aim is to achieve a high level of self-sufficiency. The building is also supplied with district heating from a pellet-fuelled combined heat and power plant built specifically for the entire site.

In future, the innovative building will combine flexible educational and school structures and a catering offering in the two-storey base area with a hospitality offer for students and tourists on the upper floors. A campus-like, communal park will be created externally. A lively, attractive ambience will be created in the park through its interplay with the building’s ground floor. The landscape architects had considered the outdoor concept for the site as a whole from the outset. Standard trees are the connecting element. As a tree canopy, they create natural shade of varying density and a pleasant microclimate for future users.

Business school as anchor user
The first main user of the new building will be a business school, which is due to commence operations in Altdorf in the coming years. Classrooms, communal areas and studios for students are planned – an offer that will give Werkmatt Uri international appeal.
"Werkmatt Uri is steadily taking shape," says Christoph Schoop, Managing Director of Werkmatt AG. "With plot 13, we are creating an innovative educational campus that combines modern learning spaces, accommodation for students and public services."

Tailwind from the Canton of Uri
Urban Camenzind, cantonal councillor and Director of Economic Affairs, also welcomes the move: "We are pleased that the project is taking another important step with the submission of the planning application and that the development of Werkmatt Uri is making concrete progress."

Next step: plot 9
In parallel to the planning application for plot 13, Werkmatt AG has started project organisation work for the neighbouring plot 9. There, a historic flat warehouse from the 1930s is being carefully transformed.
Building plots 9 and 13 will combine education, catering, services and accommodation in equal measure. Basic services are set to be made available to the public, especially in plot 9, and will make a significant contribution to a functioning commercial area. The services offered will be the heart and soul of the site as a workplace. The building application for plot 9 is expected to be submitted next year.
