Working and living in Uri – with clear processes for residence and work permits

Good guidance is crucial for a successful start in Uri. If you want to live and work here and are from abroad, you need a residence permit and often also a work permit. The canton of Uri supports skilled workers, companies and the self-employed with clear processes and personalised advice. The labour office first checks the requirements under labour law. This is followed by an assessment under migration law. If both checks are positive, a permit can be issued.

Employees from
EU or EFTA countries

For nationals from EU or EFTA states, the conditions for residence and employment in Switzerland are more favourable. These include the following countries (in alphabetical order):

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Principality of Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain.

For employees from EU and EFTA states, certain minimum requirements apply for gainful employment in Switzerland. The decisive factors are a valid employment contract, health insurance cover and, in the case of cross-border commuters, residence abroad and regular return.

Overview:

  • Valid employment contract with an employer in Switzerland
  • Take out health insurance (within 3 months)
  • Valid travel document
  • For cross-border commuters: Residence abroad and regular return (at least weekly)

Employees from EU and EFTA member states must register for gainful employment in Uri via a formal procedure with the relevant municipality. All relevant documents are checked and, depending on the duration of the contract, the appropriate type of permit is issued.

Steps at a glance:

  • Registration with the municipality of the place of residence or stay in Uri
  • Submission of the registration form to the Office for Labour and Migration Uri with documents:
    • Passport/ID, employment contract
    • Proof of activity
    • Health insurance
    • Rental agreement, if applicable
  • Depending on the contract term:
    • B permit (5 years): in the case of permanent employment or employment for a fixed term of more than 12 months
    • Permit L: for employment contracts of less than 12 months
    • ID G: for cross-border commuters resident in the EU/EFTA area

For gainful employment of up to 90 days per year, no residence or work permit is required for persons from EU/EFTA states in an employment relationship. Online registration prior to commencement of work is sufficient. The working conditions must correspond to the local and industry-specific wage and working conditions. No language or integration certificates are required for initial registration.
