Working and living in Uri – with clear processes for residence and work permits

Good guidance is crucial for a successful start in Uri. If you want to live and work here and are from abroad, you need a residence permit and often also a work permit. The canton of Uri supports skilled workers, companies and the self-employed with clear processes and personalised advice. The labour office first checks the requirements under labour law. This is followed by an assessment under migration law. If both checks are positive, a permit can be issued.

Employees from
EU or EFTA countries

Citizens of EU or EFTA countries enjoy simplified conditions for residence and employment in Switzerland. This includes the following countries (in alphabetical order):

Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Principality of Liechtenstein, Greece, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czechia, Hungary and Cyprus.

Certain minimum requirements apply to employees from EU and EFTA countries who wish to work in Switzerland. The key requirements are a valid employment contract, health insurance cover and, in the case of cross-border commuters, residence abroad and regular return trips.

Overview:

  • Valid employment contract with an employer in Switzerland
  • Health insurance (within 3 months)
  • For cross-border commuters: residence abroad and regular return (at least weekly)

Employees from EU and EFTA countries must register for employment in Uri via a formal procedure with the relevant local authority. All relevant documents are checked and, depending on the duration of the contract, the appropriate type of permit is issued.

Overview of the steps:

  • Registration with the municipality of residence or place of stay in Uri
  • Submission of the registration form with documents: passport/ID, employment contract, proof of employment, health insurance, rental agreement if applicable
  • Depending on the duration of the contract: Permit B (5 years): for permanent employment or fixed-term employment lasting longer than 12 months
    • Permit L: for employment contracts of less than 12 months
    • Permit G: for cross-border commuters residing in the EU/EFTA area
    • Permit B (5 years): for permanent employment or fixed-term employment lasting longer than 12 months

For employment of up to 90 days per year, persons from EU/EFTA countries who are in an employment relationship do not require a residence or work permit. An online notification before the start of employment is sufficient. The working conditions must comply with local and industry-specific wage and working conditions. No language or integration certificates are required for the initial registration.
